Shapes for Kids (K2): How Circle Time Builds Early English Skills

Our K2 students explored different shapes in class this week, and we captured a quick circle time moment to share with parents. 🤗💕

Circle time is more than “sitting in a circle”—it’s a powerful routine where young learners practise English in a calm, structured, and fun way. By combining visuals + movement + repetition, children learn faster and remember longer.

Why we teach shapes in K2

Learning shapes helps children build:

  • Vocabulary: circle, triangle, square, rectangle (and more)
  • Describing skills: big/small, colours, “I can see…”
  • Math readiness: recognising patterns and attributes
  • Speaking confidence: answering simple questions in a group

What children practise during circle time

In a shapes-focused circle time, children typically practise:

  1. Listening to teacher prompts (e.g., “Show me a circle!”)
  2. Copying actions to connect meaning with language
  3. Repeating key words clearly and confidently
  4. Responding with simple sentences:
    • “It’s a circle.”
    • “I can see a circle.”
    • “It’s red.” / “It’s big.”

Try these shape activities at home (2–5 minutes)

You don’t need worksheets—just use what you already have at home.

1) Shape Hunt (quick game)
Say: “Find a circle!”
Then ask: “Where is it?” / “What colour is it?”

2) Point & Say
Point to an object and ask: “What shape is it?”
If needed, give choices: “Circle or square?”

3) Draw it in the air
Ask your child to “draw” a circle/triangle/square in the air with their finger while saying the word out loud.
