In our Phonics Power‑Up Level 2 class, we connect fluency practice with decoding strategies so Primary 1 learners can read confidently and spell multisyllable words independently.
What happens in Level 2
- Fluency warm‑ups
Short, timed reads build pace and accuracy without rushing. Students track with a finger, read in phrases, and keep a steady rhythm. - Decoding with purpose
We teach children to spot key patterns—vowel teams, common prefixes/suffixes, and syllable types. Then we “say–tap–blend” and read the whole word. - From reading to spelling
After decoding, we immediately switch to spelling the same patterns. This strengthens sound‑to‑print mapping and improves writing confidence.
Our core routines
- Pattern Preview (oy/oi, ai/ay, etc.)
- Say–Tap–Blend (accurate sounds, then smooth blend)
- Chunk & Mark (divide multi‑syllable words; underline vowel teams)
- Fluency Passages (phrase reading for expression)
- Spell It Back (dictation with quick self‑check)

Example practice set
- Reading: enjoy, convoy, employ, boycott, avoid, explode, paranoid
- Spelling: employ → employee, avoid → avoidance, enjoy → enjoyment
We talk about meaning changes as endings are added, so vocabulary grows with phonics.
Home practice for 5 minutes a day
- Echo read: Parent reads a line, child echoes with the same phrasing.
- Circle the pattern: Mark the vowel team, tap, blend, read.
- Build and check: Spell the word, then check chunks against the reading card.
- One sentence daily: Use a target word in a simple sentence to connect reading, spelling, and writing.
