In Phonics Power‑Up Level 2 Lesson 3, our learners take a key step: reading a short paragraph smoothly and with meaning. This lesson connects phonics decoding to real reading—tracking, blending, and expression—so confidence grows with every line.
Progress snapshot
- Starting point: secure with CVCs and common sight words; ready for blends
- Focus skills: pointer tracking, blends/clusters, phrasing with punctuation
- Outcome: students read a short paragraph from start to finish with basic expression
Lesson flow
- Revisit sounds and high‑frequency words
- Pointer tracking drill for eye movement and pacing
- Blend and decode: consonant blends (e.g., st-, dr-, gr-, cr-)
- Picture cues → quick meaning checks (retell in 1–2 sentences)
- Read the short paragraph twice:
- Pass 1: accuracy and sounding‑out
- Pass 2: phrasing, pauses, and expression
- Micro‑wins: sticker/coin and a specific praise note
Why this works
- Controlled texts ensure success while introducing challenge
- Multisensory routines link sound → print → meaning
- Immediate feedback prevents fossilising errors
- Repeated reading builds fluency and stamina
Parent tips (home practice 10–12 minutes)
- Track with a finger or pencil; one breath per phrase
- If a word is tricky: look → say first sound → blend → reread the sentence
- After reading, ask: “What happened first/next/last?”
- Celebrate smooth phrases, not just speed
