Table of Contents

At FTL, we celebrate small wins that build big confidence. In this short video, a K1 learner recalls common Chinese New Year vocabulary during a playful picture‑talk activity. It’s joyful, fast, and packed with purposeful repetition—the FTL way.

What vocabulary did we practice?

  • lion dance
  • red packets
  • lanterns
  • firecrackers
  • turnip cake
  • drum
  • dragon dance
  • family
  • good luck

Why this activity builds confidence

  • Curiosity: We start with “What do you notice?” to invite thinking.
  • Confidence: Low‑pressure prompts and immediate praise.
  • Creativity: Children connect words to real‑life experiences and celebrations.
  • Consistency: Familiar routines and spiral review every lesson.

Try it at home or in class (5‑minute plan)

  1. Point & Say: Point to a picture; model the word; child repeats 2–3 times.
  2. Find & Touch: “Touch the lanterns… now the drum.”
  3. Act It Out: Pretend lion dance, drum tapping, handing red packets.
  4. My Turn / Your Turn: Swap roles—child points and you answer.
  5. Photo Hunt: Invite children to spot these words in festival decorations.

Scaffolds for mixed abilities

  • Beginners: one‑word responses + gestures.
  • Developing: full phrases—“I see a lion dance.”
  • Confident speakers: short sentences with feelings—“I like the lion dance because it’s loud.”

Extend the learning

  • Sound focus: /l/ in lion, lantern; /dr/ in drum, dragon.
  • Mini‑writing: Label one picture with parent/teacher support.
  • Culture talk: Compare family traditions respectfully.

What parents say
“Short, happy practice that my child asks for.”
“Speaking confidence improved within weeks.”
