- Reading fluency is the bridge between sounding out and true understanding. When children read in smooth phrases with appropriate pace and expression, they free up mental space to think about meaning. That’s the goal of FUNdation Level 3 (Stage 2)—turning strong decoding into confident, connected reading.
Inside our Stage 2 routines
Phrase reading for natural pacing
We practise reading short, meaningful phrases rather than single, choppy words. This helps learners group words the way we speak, which supports comprehension and makes reading feel easier.
Pointer tracking for accuracy and focus
Learners use their eyes and a pointer to track each phrase. This reduces line-skips and reversals and reinforces left-to-right directionality—small habits that add up to big gains in accuracy.
Pattern spotting: from decoding to automaticity
While reading, children look for familiar patterns—vowel teams, common blends, and word endings. Recognising these chunks speeds up word solving and builds automaticity.
Quick written follow-ups to lock in learning
Short writing tasks immediately after reading help consolidate new patterns and vocabulary. Children “spell it back,” highlight key chunks, and complete brief comprehension checks.
Meet Ms. Keiana: A warm welcome to Tai Po
We’re delighted to welcome Ms. Keiana to our team. Her friendly presence, clear explanations, and responsive feedback create a classroom where learners feel safe to try, practise, and grow. This video captures her early lessons with FUNdation Level 3 (Stage 2) at our Tai Po campus.
How families can support fluency at home
- Read in phrases: draw slashes between natural word groups.
- Track with a finger or card for one page, then “eyes only.”
- Re-read favourite pages for smoother expression.
- Notice patterns: circle vowel teams and common endings.
- Keep it short and cheerful—5 minutes daily is powerful.
